Designed Environments

In Designed Environments, I am exploring public space and the environment; how it is designed by nature and humanity alike, how it is embodied, and how it influences its inhabitants. Additionally, I am exploring the idea of the flaneur and how they walk through society, existing within and outside of it as they live and observe. By combining the investigation of public space and environment with the idea of the flaneur, I bring my camera and document my surroundings with my design background and principles in mind—formally driving my photography, composition, and gaze. The use of black and white film puts emphasis on form and line both while shooting and in the final work.

The analogue process

While this entire project has been shot on black and white 35mm film, only the first phase of this project was printed in the darkroom using the silver gelatin printing process. The darkroom adds a fitting physicality to the production process of these prints. A true return to slow making, in both the shooting and production phases, further evokes the spirit of the flaneur and meditative presence this project contains in the shooting process.
